Alice Springs Australia Info

Alice Springs Australia

The downtown has wonderful art galleries that you can browse and pick up some aboriginal art. Stores to buy digger hats and a nice little mall with a grocery store and theater. Outside Alice not far is the nature walk area where there is a zoo that is open concept and great walking trails that end up in an ampitheater that has a great Aussie movie on the land and animals.Buy a hat with a net if you don't like bush flies. They are everywhere. Don't wear white sneaks as they will be red with the dust. The hot air balloning in Alice is incredible. You go up in the early am and watch the sun rise. Great experience.
Quick tips/suggestions
Eat in the bars downtown and soak up the Aussie ambiance. Breakfast is great in the cafe's outside downtown.Go hot air ballooning in the early hours for the greatest view of the sunrise and the desert colors. With a car you can stop and watch the budgies and the parrots in the trees and watch the wallabys on the hillside outside Alice. Ask the locals where to go to see them feed.
"Best Way to Get Around (i.e. walking, driving, taxis, public transportation etc.) Rent a jeep. Go on a tour if you don't like adventure. With a car you can stop and watch the wild camels and the flocks of budgies and exotic birds. Go off road and experience the red dust clouds behind you.Wonderful"

"We flew out the next morning to Alice Springs, $200 AU. From there we drove to Ayers Rock. Watch out! If you have a couple of days, take a tour bus. If not, be prepared for expensive car rentals. The car rental rates are reasonable at first, but it's the limited kilometers that get you. You get 100 KM a day but it's over a 1000-KM to drive to the rock! $380 later we got to the rock, by the way, the hype you'll hear about the Crater before getting to Ayers Rock? Is not worth the time at all, just a tourist "con". The desert, however, was beautiful! Sunset on the "Rock" is a must see!
The "rock" is a huge monolith; I've never seen anything like it! However, lodging surrounding the rock is very expensive! Make your reservations 6 months ahead (Desert Sands is the most inexpensive). We drove back the next day to Alice Springs. (It is good advice not to drive at night - camels, cows, kangaroos, etc. are out and running!) "

"Stunning photographic images of nature at its best from the Red Centre form the backdrop as the changing lights form stars on the walls. Accompanying this is music encapsulating the story being told by these images dominated by the loud echoing throb of a didgeridoo. Enthralled is the only way to describe the audience at this performance at the Sounds of Starlight Theatre in Alice Springs. Comments such as the show was an entire experience of the senses and not 'just' a musical performance,' or 'a mystical, moving experience,' or 'an absolutely brilliant performance, I’ve never enjoyed the sound of the didgeridoo so much,' sum it up perfectly.
