Ayers Rock Australia Info
Ayers Rock Australia
Can you hear it? It is the wind carrying the spirits of Uluru. The name itself invokes
the mind with images of the Aborigines and 40,000 years of culture. A sacred place. A
place where light and color meet the desert. The spirits play a song through the caves
and holes of this monolithic giant, coming into view and hiding behind shadows. An aura
engulphs this buried mountain, changing from a fiery blaze to shades of crimson and
gold. The sun sets over the land in strands of light until all that is left is a
darkening hole. Climb to the top and witness a desert full of deep colors and shadows.
Of views that go on until the desert meets the sky. Walk around the Rock---this is a
sacred place to the Aboriginies. Listen to the stories in the wind.
Climbing Ayers Rock remains a highlight. It is still an option but it is hard work.
Be careful when climbing (don’t chase your hat if it blows off as a number of people
have been killed doing that!) Alternatively, walk around the base (some areas are off
limits) to see the wild flowers, the aboriginal paintings, or else take an aboriginal
guided tour or visit the cultural center.
Best thing to do is to climb the rock. It is a rather steep climb and at some places is about 50 degree angle. You can almost walk the base of the rock which is about a 10km walk. The traditional owners ask that you respect their law by not climbing the rock so you need to decide for yourself.
Quick tips/suggestions
I'd suggest not climbing in the middle of the day in summer as the temperature can rise to 47 degrees (Celsius) during the day. It takes about 1-2 hours to climb depending on your fitness level. It's also a good idea to take plenty of water to drink.
Best Way to Get Around (i.e. walking, driving, taxis, public transportation etc.)
There are buses constantly going to Uluru so you can join in with the crowds. You can also go on a helicopter flight over the rock or the spectacular dawn hot air balloon flight. There are also Harley rides you can go on around the base of the rock.
