Brisbane, Australia

Brisbane, Australia’s third largest city after Melbourne and Sydney, is advancing into an unexpected metropolis, with sudden and continued developments of apartments and skyscrapers springing up along the city’s river edge. With a population of 1.6 million, spread over the largest area of any city in Australia, Brisbane’s new luxury apartment buildings possibly herald a new era in the city’s relatively young life. A far cry from its beginnings as a penal settlement in 1824, Brisbane is the fastest growing city in Australia, and with the developments in real estate, the city has started to make the city centre an appealing place to live and work. My first impression of Brisbane, after I had spent two months in Melbourne, was that I had come to a less desirable part of Australia; this view, at the time, could not have been further from the above description if it tried. The buildings seemed to shout 1960 at me, and the apparent lack of development along the river, in direct contrast to that land’s use in Melbourne, was disappointing. The abundance of culture and excitement that I had left behind me, in a city that was thriving and celebrating a new festival almost every week, meant that my initial instinct was to leave Brisbane -and fast! This instinct, whilst it had served me very well up until this point, had to be ignored. I needed to give Brisbane a chance to redeem itself, as paid work was high on my agenda. Happily, over the next few weeks, Brisbane opened itself up to me. Whereas other cities I had visited shouted out their attractions and ‘must sees’, Brisbane, possibly because of its relaxed nature, had hidden depths. My initial observations regarding the lack of river development were indeed wrong. On its south bank, a relatively new creation of a man-made beach, with real sand and palm trees, meant that the expectations of tourists for a beach in every city in Australia was fulfilled, whilst also creating an area for craft markets and festivals to flourish. There might not have been festivals every week, but when they were on, you knew about it and, perhaps, weren’t so desensitised to the enjoyment of them. In addition to the recreational developments of the river, further towards the central business district, an abundance of luxury river-side apartments were being built. As part of my role working in a property values company, I was able to see first-hand the expansion plans for Brisbane. These apartments -- some of them not even finished -- had people just queuing to move in, ready to start their lives in this seemingly fresh new city. No sooner had one apartment block been finished than another was being built. The transformation taking place in the city centre, in particular, would suggest that those in charge in Brisbane are determined to make it a realistic choice for businesses, offering an alternative to the increasingly expensive and cramped Sydney.
