Byron Bay is one of the most amazing towns on the east coast of Australia. Known as one of the old hippy towns, it is a buzz with tourists and backpackers from all over the world.
Visit the most easterly point in Australia. The views from the lighthouse will blow you away. Look out over the ocean and see right down the coast of NSW. You can see beach for miles and miles.
Byron is about 40 minutes from the Gold Coast by car or bus, or you can also fly into Ballina, which is about 15-minute drive away. There are great places to stay, both budget or luxury resorts.
There is the Great Northern Hotel across from the beach in the heart of town and it is always a buzz with live music and a great place to meet, enjoy the local fish and chips from the seafront restaurant, or just order and go and sit in the park and watch the waves roll in. There are many local restaurants and my favourite is Thai Lucy’s, which serves great food at a great cost. A great meal costs about $20 including a drink.
Learn to surf in Byron . . . it’s a local pastime. Come, relax, and soak up the sun.
Azabus far excedes the common thread of bed and breakfasts.
This beautifully designed tree top village follows eastern architecture and decor.
A boardwalk leads from suite to suite and in the main homestead is a kitchen and dining where
patrons experience the BEST included breakfast this side of the world. The service is
superb, the privacy guaranteed (with only five suites and no kids). A heated
(in winter) pool and spa are on offer along with a massuese specialising in AVEDA
products. Packages can be obtained (like the one we got) with a massage and breakfast
included. Very nice.
The Cape Byron Lighthouse was absolutely gorgeous. It had several boardwalks emanating from it down to various parts of the beach. We were delighted to see some black and white mountain goats grazing in the shade on the side of the hill the Lighthouse is situated on. We felt like it was such a workout climbing up and down all of those stairs. Humpbacked whales regularly migrate in August back to Antarctica. We didn't see any while we were there on September 2nd, but we hope to make it back in mid-August next year. Dolphins also regularly swim in the ocean there, and we saw some of them.
The lighthouse is the easternmost point on mainland Australia. We took a ride out to Bangalow at night and saw the gorgeous full moon lighting up the ocean and many, many stars. The hippy crowd was quite big here. There were many VW vans here. Also, every pregnant woman wore a tube top and pants that exposed their bellies to the bright sun.
Quick tips/suggestionsbr>
Get in shape before tackling all of those uphill stairs! Plan to spend about four hours at least enjoying the walks around the lighthouse, and rest if you have to.
Best Way to Get Around (i.e. walking, driving, taxis, public transportation etc.)
We drove there from our motel. Parking was ample and cost $5.00, but I wouldn't have been able to take the walk back to the motel after our adventures at the lighthouse, so I'm glad we had the car.
