In keeping with Cairns' development as a world class tourism destination, so it follows that resort hotels like the Accor's Five-Star Sofitel Reef Casino should come to town. Opened in 1996 at a cost of $220 million, it boasts a two-level boutique casino, four restaurants, a nightclub and (wait for it) a fully enclosed rainforest dome that houses numerous exotic birds, marsupials, reptiles and a fully grown freshwater crocodile (honest!). See separate entry.
I confess little excitement in blackjack tables and roulette wheels, so I was more interested in what the hotel itself offered.
My room, on the fourth floor, was lavish and spacious, complete with spa bath. I liked the all-around slatted windows that allowed a typically diffuse natural tropical lighting effect without compromising security or privacy. The décor was bright and cheery and the ample bed superb. I slept like the proverbial!
As you would expect, there is a range of dining options available, which I will deal with separately, and the obligatory outdoor pool, gym, sauna etc.
As brief as it was, I enjoyed my stay at the hotel and could not raise any substantial criticisms. If you are used to above-average accommodation and have the where-with-all, then the Sofitel Reef Casino should be on your list.

Nice hotel. The staff was very accommodating, and rooms were very comfortable. Our room overlooked the bay, and we were able to see all of the boats going out each morning and coming in in the evenings.
The Hilton is also just walking distance from where everything is 'happening.' Within 5 minutes, you can reach the boat docks, where the tours leave; the Pier Mall; all downtown shopping, and several great restaurants. For those of us that like a little extra entertainment, The Reef Casino is right across the street!

Let's get a couple of things out of the way first. If the thought of encountering a gecko on the way to the pool fills you with terror, this is not the place for you. If you are horrified at the thought of flocks of tropical birds flying overhead, this is not the place for you. If the smell of tropical flowers is going to upset your appreciation of breakfast, this is not the place for you. If you recoil in horror at the thought of having to walk a couple hundred feet to some of the best restaurants in Cairns, this is not the place for you. If all those sound like a benefit instead of a hindrance, you need to check this place out. Lilybank B&B ( http://www.lilybank.com.au ) is in a beautifully restored historic Queenslander, about a 5 minute drive from the airport. (And that is if the cabby takes his time.) Being that close, I can't say I recall ever being disturbed the the sound of planes taking off or landing ... but it did make it very convenient.
Your choice of continental or cooked breakfast comes with your accommodation price, and the food is very good. When I was there the menu included lamb and salmon as well as the more traditional bacon and eggs. Because it's small, it's quiet, if you don't count the occasional vocal bird flying by. The size also means you get to meet fellow guests and share your experiences.
Your hosts (Pat and Mike) are very helpful, and will be glad to help you select from among the things to do in and around Cairns. They'll make bookings for you, help you find what you want to eat, and generally do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable. They'll even suggest some things you might not hear about any other way, like Cape York Air's "Play Postie for a Day" trip. I almost felt like I was visiting with old friends rather than staying in a guest accommodation. Internet access available for a truly nominal charge. I would certainly make this my base for any future trips to Cairns.

This was the most charming fully furnished beachfront villa. Of course the park also has tent and caravan sites. It has a covered inground freshwater swimming pool and stinger net in season. The water on the beach has stingers(box jellyfish) from about October thru April; so netted swim areas are provided. ... unique tropical experience!
