Jervis Bay Info
Jervis Bay
Jervis Bay is great for a quiet, relaxing holiday, away from the busy city streets and hectic kaos that surrounds most popular holiday towns.
Jervis Bay offers:
Tranquil beaches within the bay, with background settings of nature reserves and national parks.
Holiday parks with waterside settings in the main township, Huskisson, and the surrounding smaller towns
A camping site situated within the Jervis Bay National Park, Green Patch, get in early to get a camping site during Christmas Break. This place is popular because of it's setting and it's lovely sheltered beach which offers great swimming for the whole family. On the grassed area you can hand feed the native parrots.
There is also an old ruined lighthouse within the Jervis Bay National Park that is worth a visit.
Bush walks, hikes to veiwing points and out off the way beaches are popular activities here.
If you love nature you'll love it at Jervis Bay
Quick tips/suggestions
Don't take your surf board, unless you don't mind a bit of travelling for your sport.
Don't expect to find a heap of shops, thats the great thing about this place.
Don't expect a great night life here either, although the pub in Huskisson does do a pretty good trade and the guest rooms are pretty cheap.
Best Way to Get Around (i.e. walking, driving, taxis, public transportation etc.)
The best way around would be by car to get to those of the beaten track places and to drive through the parks.
Jervis Bay is reached by heading South from Sydney on the Princes Highway - 1 and turning off at Tomerong.
As with most of Australia, there are always buses that will get you to most areas townships and they are pretty regular.
While travelling form Sydney to Jervis Bay you we passed through Wollongong, an industrial city an hour south of Sydney, and several other small townships.
At Wollongong we stopped at Flagstaff Point, where we could veiw the harbour and take a walk around to stretch our legs. We vowed that we would return one weekend to take a longer walk around this city.
From Wollongong we carried on to the township, Kiama, where we bought our lunch and went to view the Kiama Blowhole. Unfortunately the blowhole wasn't very active the day we went there, but from postcards and pictures we have seen, it gives quite a display when it is.
Kiama is also an older town and has many older homes and shops there, which are worth looking around at to get a bit of a history kick.
Futher south we passed through Gerringong and Gerroa, both beachside towns. On the headland of Gerringong you will discover an Old Butter Factory, an old building from Australia's dairing history. Gerroa is on the coastline of Seven Mile Beach, which is reknowned for it's windsurfing.
Both beaches, and the rest of the coast, are great for fishing, swimming, surfing and other water sports
Then, before we got to Jervis Bay, we travelled through Nowra, which is the home of the Fleet Air Arm of the Australian Navy. Unfortunately time was not on our side so we couldn't stop to have a look at the Naval Aviation Museum that is there, but I have heard it's worth a trip.
