Margaret River Australia

During my time in Australia, I have made a point to visit as many of the celebrated wine regions as possible because soon after arrival here, I realised that the Australians keep the best stuff for themselves. For that reason Margaret River was our first destination in the southwest after leaving Perth. The trip takes about three hours by car, passing through suburbs and a few family-oriented, holiday resort towns such as Bunbury and Busselton. The Margaret River region applies to the area on a wide peninsula marked by Cape Naturaliste to the north and Cape Leeuwin to the south, with national parks and bushland stretching the distance along the spectacular coastline. Besides the wine, Margaret River is famous for its world class surf, attracting top athletes from all over. Incredible waves roll up from cape to cape but the best known surfing and windsurfing spots are Yallingup and Prevelly Park. It is also riddled with fantastical caves, many of which are marked along the Caves Road that cuts through the peninsula. We chose to camp during our time here, a tent site being easy to find even though it was the height of high season – between Christmas and New Year. CALM (the controversial park and forestry management department in Western Australia – controversial because it manages the national parks at the same time as dispatching virgin forest to logging companies) has well looked after bush campgrounds all over this region. Other accommodation possibilities in this area are bed and breakfasts, especially around Margaret River and Cowaramup, farmstays and motels.
Our main intent was to do some serious wine tasting during our limited time here so we chose a couple of the bigger names and then stopped in at a few boutique and family-run operations to compare. I always feel that wine tasting is a personal affair and that people should make up their own minds about what they like and dislike, but I would recommend Vasse Felix, Pierro and Voyager Estate to get started on. The wines in this region tend to be light due to the sandy soil, so chardonnays, pinots and other lighter grape varieties fare well.
When you are finished with the wines, drop by the Bootleg Brewery off the Caves Road and cleanse the palate with some of their Wills Pils or Brown Ale while lounging on the lawn.
The actual town of Margaret River itself is a lively little place during the summer months, the main street lined with cafés and restaurants. Many of the region’s wineries also offer fine dining which can be the perfect place to sample local produce matched with the local wines.
I was completely taken by this part of the world with its combination of rugged natural beauty and modest pursuit of fine living. Beaches, vineyards, bushwalks, vibrant cuisine, a small and friendly population – the basic elements for a peaceful and happy life are all thriving here.
