Laid-back and postcard-perfect, the Florida Keys are strewn with swaying palm trees
and sandy beaches. This chain of subtropical islands, linked by the Overseas Highway
(U.S. 1), ends in Key West, a fanciful town that’s as much a state of mind as it is a
prime vacation spot. Artists, writers, fishers, and retirees make their homes in the
Keys, amid fragile natural resources that include coral reefs, mangroves, great white
herons, and Key deer, a miniature subspecies of Virginia white-tailed deer.
Positioned just south of Miami, this chain of more than 100 tropical islands
attracts tourists in search of distinct sportfishing, diving, and local flavor.
The islands are connected by a group of 42 bridges. Florida is the only state in the continental United States to have extensive coral reefs located near its coast.The array of historic places, regional cuisines, tropical flora and fauna, and eclectic architecture characterize the uniqueness of the Florida Keys...
