Watsons Bay

There are several ways to get out to Watson's Bay. You can take a ferry, drive, take the Bondi Explorer (Blue Bus), or, as I did, take a weekend cruise on Captain Cook's Explorer ship. We arrived there on a very rainy and chilly Saturday morning via tender off the ship. A steep climb up the ferry dock and a few minutes wait for a break in the rain and we were off to climp up to the Gap. Long famous as a place of suicides, especially during hard economic times, the Gap is actually on the outer range of hills that separate Sydney Harbour from the vast southern ocean. Fierce tides and nasty currents make this a very dangerous, but extremely beautiful area. A few minutes more very fast walk and you can be at the very southern headlands to Sydney Harbour. The walk was slippery in the rain and at times difficult. I was willing to give up about halfway along only to be told that we weren't coming down the same way. Oh well, go for it! Damp and chilled, we still thrilled to the view from the top. Much effort is being made to protect the bush lands and to remove non-native species of plants from this area. Such imports as lantana, honeysuckle, and privot have made it difficult for native plants to survive. All in all, not a difficult walk for most people on a dry day. Not handicapped accessible. No handrails in steep areas. Another viewing area further west is accessible (a stop on the Bondi Explorer bus).
