Western Australia Tourism

Select an area of the state that you want to really explore, unless you have unlimited time and are intending to spend many weeks or months here. We chose to arrive into Perth and just tour around the southwest, which was achievable in the two weeks but still involved a considerable amount of time on the road. Spend time in Perth, the world’s most isolated city – take a ferry along the Swan River and visit some wineries up to the northeast or inspect the nouveau riche abodes that line the river in the suburbs of Dalkeith and Peppermint Grove on the way to colonial Fremantle.
Walk or bike through Kings Park, a 4 square km park in the centre of the city that preserves native bushland as it was before European colonisation and also has a botanical garden. It’s quite easy to get lost in this park so be sure to take along a map from the information centre. Rottnest Island is an easy day trip from either city. Further down the coast are the beautiful Margaret River wine region, the giant karri forests and Cape Le Grand National Park, among other points of interest.
Quick tips/suggestions
Respect the fact that Western Australia covers one third of the entire country and plan your trip accordingly. The more time you spend in one area, the richer the rewards.
Best Way to Get Around (i.e. walking, driving, taxis, public transportation etc.) Having a car is unfortunately the only way you can realistically expect to see the southwest. Some bus services and a number of tour groups do operate in this area but these options don’t offer much flexibility as far as visiting off the beaten track sights and parks. Moving around Perth and Fremantle however is easy thanks to extensive bus, train and ferry systems, one bus even being free (the CAT). When hiring a car to travel further afield, consider a 4wd if you can afford it since there are a great many dirt tracks crisscrossing the southwest which are out of bounds for a standard vehicle. We only had an economy car that served its purpose well but next time I will be sure to procure something sturdier in order to investigate some of those beckoning rutted trails.
